  • Incident Overview:
    • Recently, the consulate has received multiple reports of thefts in Ho Chi Minh City, where victims have been targeted by women speaking broken Japanese. These individuals use physical contact, such as hugs or touches, to distract victims and steal their belongings like phones and wallets.
  • Example Report:
    • In early July, during the late night in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, a Japanese expatriate was approached by Vietnamese women who spoke broken Japanese, offering massages and touching the victim’s body. Despite ignoring the women, the victim later realized that their smartphone, which was kept in their clothing, was missing after the women said “goodbye” and left.
  • Precautionary Measures:
    • Avoid Unwanted Contact: Be cautious if approached by strangers or if you notice a sudden increase in people around you. Avoid allowing physical contact with unknown individuals.
    • Be Vigilant: Pickpockets often target areas with fewer people and may take advantage of distractions. If approached by individuals like those described, leave the area immediately.
    • Secure Valuables: Keep your phone, wallet, and other valuables secured in your bag or on your person.
  • If You Become a Victim:
    • Report the Incident: Immediately report the theft to local authorities and contact your embassy or consulate for assistance.
    • Monitor and Secure: Report any stolen credit cards or personal information to prevent misuse and take necessary steps to secure your accounts.
