  • Incident Overview: On June 20th, around 1:30 AM, six Japanese travelers were victims of an armed robbery in Honolulu. While walking on a pier extending from the sand to the sea near Waikiki Beach (near Queen’s Beach), they were threatened at gunpoint by a man who stole their bag containing passports, credit cards, and cash.
  • If You Become a Victim: In the event of a robbery or similar incident, prioritize your safety and remain calm. Immediately report the crime to the police by calling 911. Depending on the situation, visit the nearest police station to file a report and obtain a crime report or certificate.
  • Travel Safety Tips: Despite Hawaii’s reputation as a relatively safe tourist destination, incidents like the armed robbery mentioned above are on the rise, especially during tourist seasons. Be cautious of pickpocketing, theft of passports, snorkeling and surfing accidents, and car break-ins at beach parking lots or shopping malls.

Remember that as a foreign tourist, you might be perceived as a target. To ensure your safety:

    • Avoid unnecessary outings at night.
    • Keep your valuables and bags with you at all times.
    • Be mindful of your surroundings and act prudently.

Additionally, in case of accidents or sudden illnesses that require emergency hospitalization, you might face high medical costs (in the tens of thousands of dollars). It is strongly recommended to purchase travel insurance before your trip.
