The Thai government has announced changes to entry requirements effective from June 1, 2024, following the cabinet decision on May 28, 2024, under Agenda 13 (Policies on Tourism and Economic Promotion). Key measures related to Japanese nationals are as follows:
- Expansion of Visa Exemption and Extension of Stay Duration
- The number of countries eligible for short-term visa exemptions has been expanded to 93. For nationals from these countries, including Japanese citizens, the duration of stay upon entry to Thailand has been extended from 30 days to 60 days.
- One-Year Stay Allowance After Completion of Educational Visa
- Individuals staying in Thailand on an educational visa who obtain a certificate from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation will be allowed to remain in Thailand for one year after completing their studies to seek employment or engage in other activities.
- Introduction of the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
- A new visa, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), has been introduced for remote workers, freelancers, and those wishing to stay for activities such as learning Muay Thai or other martial arts. This visa allows for a stay of 180 days, with a possibility for a one-time extension of 180 days.
- Changes to Insurance Requirements for Retirement Visa Applications
- The insurance requirements for applying for a retirement visa have been revised. The insurance policy must cover outpatient medical expenses of at least 40,000 Baht and inpatient medical expenses of at least 400,000 Baht.
