According to a statement from the Copenhagen Police, “Over 2,400 cases of pickpocketing have been reported in our jurisdiction between January and April 2024. Please be vigilant with your bags and valuables when moving through crowded areas. Also, exercise caution during the street festival (Distortion) that begins today (29th) in the city.” The police are urging the public to stay alert.

To avoid becoming a victim of pickpocketing, please keep the following points in mind:

  • In crowded areas such as the Central Station, Strøget, and surrounding areas, be on the lookout for individuals displaying suspicious behavior, such as closely observing others’ belongings.
  • Keep valuables like wallets and passports in inner pockets or inside your clothing, and keep them close to your body. If your pockets have buttons, make sure they are fastened.
  • Carry shoulder bags and backpacks in front of your body, keeping them within your sight at all times.
  • Do not leave your belongings, smartphones, etc., unattended on train racks, aisles, or restaurant tables. Avoid hanging bags on the back of chairs or placing them under tables in restaurants.
  • Even during various activities (such as hotel check-ins, ticket purchases, currency exchanges, or taking photos), do not lose sight of your belongings.
  • Be especially cautious if approached by strangers. Even if they seem friendly, it’s best to ignore them and move on. If they persistently follow you, enter the nearest store or public place.
