In Tunisia, deaths from rabies occur every year. Rabies is an infectious disease caused by the rabies virus, and once symptoms appear, it is almost 100% fatal.

In the past three years, the number of rabies-related deaths in Tunisia has been increasing, with four deaths reported this year alone. The rabies virus is present in the saliva of mammals such as dogs, cats, and bats that are infected with the virus. The virus can enter the human body through bites, scratches, or if the saliva from an infected animal comes into contact with wounds or mucous membranes such as the eyes or mouth.

If you are bitten, scratched, or have your wounds, eyes, or mouth licked by an animal, immediately wash the area thoroughly with soap and water for about 15 minutes, and if available, apply a disinfectant. Depending on the severity of the injury, rabies vaccination (French: Vaccination Antirabique) or other treatments may be necessary. Please consult the Pasteur Institute of Tunis or a nearby medical facility.
