1. Situation Overview

Dengue fever cases transmitted by mosquitoes are on the rise in Chile. On April 15, the Chilean Ministry of Health announced a significant increase in dengue fever cases, confirming 179 cases so far this year. Authorities have discovered mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever at a bus terminal in Los Andes Province, prompting preventative measures such as fumigation.

In response to this situation, the National Office of Emergency of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security (SENAPRED) issued a warning for Los Andes Province on April 16.

2. Infection Prevention

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Since there is no specific treatment for dengue fever, preventing mosquito bites is crucial. To reduce the risk of infection, please take the following precautions:

  • Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants to minimize skin exposure.
  • Use insect repellent frequently, especially on exposed skin.
  • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are likely to breed, such as stagnant water, and ensure that items like buckets, tires, and flower vases are not collecting water in your surroundings.
  • Minimize outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity times, typically early morning and late afternoon.

3. Additional Caution

Given the increasing number of cases and the potential for the affected areas to expand, residents and travelers in Chile are urged to remain vigilant. Continue to take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites and reduce the risk of infection.
