  • On the afternoon of April 14, around 4:00 PM, a Japanese traveler walking near Von Wielligh Street in Johannesburg’s CBD was attacked from behind by what appeared to be a group of three individuals. The traveler was choked and had their wallet and bag containing a computer and other items stolen.
  • Please take the following safety measures into consideration:

    (1) Johannesburg’s CBD is known for frequent incidents of robbery and theft, occurring both day and night. It is designated as a level 2 danger zone (avoid non-essential travel) along with the CBDs of Tshwane (formerly Pretoria) and Durban. Refer to safety guides such as the “Safety Guidelines for Staying in South Africa” and avoid unnecessary proximity to potentially dangerous areas.

    (2) Many criminals in South Africa are unemployed and target individuals for theft. You may be targeted based on your appearance, including clothing and accessories, or if you visibly display smartphones or cash. Be aware that people of Asian descent, including Japanese, may stand out more and take extra precautions.

    (3) If threatened with a weapon such as a gun or knife, do not resist. Resistance greatly increases the risk of harm from the weapon.

    (4) Ensure you have measures in place to remotely wipe your smartphone if stolen, and keep emergency contact information for credit cards and other valuables. If you are a victim, take immediate steps to deactivate and mitigate further damage.

    (5) Avoid walking in the city at all times of day and night; use vehicles for transportation instead.
