Safety Tips to Avoid Theft:

  1. Awareness: Theft (pickpocketing and snatching) is prevalent in Addis Ababa, both day and night. Foreigners are just as likely to be targeted as locals. Always be aware of the possibility of being targeted, especially when walking early in the morning or at night.
  2. Precaution: Theft often involves distractions like grabbing an arm, spitting, or pretending to sell something to divert attention while stealing valuables. Ensure that your valuables like wallets and smartphones are secured with chains or straps and attached to your clothing or body.
  3. Vigilance: Stay alert and if you notice suspicious individuals approaching or any unusual behavior, leave the area immediately. Seek assistance from street police or nearby people using clear and understandable language.
