In January 2023, due to the occurrence of three theft incidents involving Japanese nationals, we sent a consular email to raise awareness. However, this month, two new theft incidents involving Japanese nationals have occurred:

At the beginning of this month, an attempted theft (car break-in) occurred when a victim’s vehicle, parked in a parking lot of a friend’s apartment, was pried open on the driver’s side rear door with a tool resembling a crowbar.

Last Saturday, a theft (pickpocketing) incident occurred while the victim was traveling on a crowded bus. The victim’s mobile phone was stolen from a backpack. Although the victim was holding the backpack close to their chest, they occasionally took out and put away the phone to check the bus route. Shortly before disembarking, the thief opened the zipper of the backpack on the victim’s back and stole the phone.

In Cuba, crime statistics are not published, making it difficult to assess the security situation. However, recent trends indicate a clear deterioration in safety. If you are planning to travel to Cuba, please discard any assumptions that it is safer compared to other Latin American countries and take appropriate safety precautions.
