Reported Crimes Against Japanese Nationals
The following are reports of incidents involving Japanese nationals provided this year. For your reference, please be cautious to avoid becoming a victim.
- Mid-March: In the evening, a male tourist descending the stairs at Fulton Street station was suddenly attacked from behind by two men, who beat him on the head until he lost consciousness and then robbed him of his belongings, including valuables.
- Late March: In the morning, a woman walking near 16th Street on 6th Ave for her commute was suddenly struck on the right cheek by a man walking toward her from the front.
- Late April: In the evening, a woman descending the stairs at Times Sq station was unexpectedly pushed from behind by 5-6 women. When her friend confronted the women, they left silently.
- Late April: In the evening, a woman and her two children exiting at 15th Street on the Market-Frankford Line in Philadelphia were suddenly verbally abused by four men on the platform, who threw a bag of candy and a bottle of milk at them. The men shouted insults and then left.
- Early June: In the evening, a woman walking near 44th Street on 11th Ave was pulled by her hair from behind and pushed to the ground by a woman who had been loitering nearby. The woman then struck her on the back of the head. By the time the police arrived, the attacker had engaged in suspicious behavior such as climbing on top of a car hood, but was detained by the police.
- Early September: In the evening, a woman riding a Citi Bike through Chinatown was suddenly hit by a thrown can from a man. Fortunately, the can missed her, and when the man tried to attack, she managed to leave the scene.
- Mid-September: Late at night, a male tourist in Philadelphia had his bag containing his passport, cash, credit cards, and driver’s license snatched by a man.
- Early October: A man walking near 9th Ave in Brooklyn for shopping was filmed by a man who, after being asked if he was a YouTuber, suddenly struck him on the jaw while making insulting remarks.
- Mid-November: At night, a man ascending the stairs toward the turnstile at Court Square subway station in Long Island City was suddenly attacked and assaulted by a man suspected of drug use. Although the Japanese man was not injured, his coat was damaged.
