[Points]
A robbery occurred in the Diepsloot area (township) in northern Johannesburg, where a Japanese national was robbed of cash by individuals posing as police officers.

[Details]

  1. The outline of the incident is as follows:
    (1) On Tuesday, July 23, around noon, while the Japanese national was driving through the Diepsloot area in Johannesburg, several individuals dressed in police uniforms demanded that the vehicle stop and that the occupants exit the vehicle.
    (2) The Japanese national was then forced to lie on the hood of the car and had their hands restrained behind their back.
    (3) The perpetrators searched the inside of the car and the bags, stating things like, “Do you not have a driver’s license? This vehicle is stolen. All the bills in your wallet are counterfeit. We will confiscate them,” and stole approximately 2,000 rand (about 110 dollars).
    (4) The perpetrators told the victim, “Do not move until we leave,” and then departed.
    (5) Vehicles similar to patrol cars were also parked in the vicinity.
  2. Please take the following safety measures:
    (1) When driving, gather information about the safety of your route in advance and avoid dangerous routes as much as possible.
    (2) Be aware that there have been reports of thefts of police uniforms and patrol cars, and that crimes using these stolen items are prevalent.
    (3) Even if you believe the individuals to be real police officers, do not open doors or windows easily. Open only the minimum necessary window for conversation and request identification from the individuals cautiously.
    (4) Prioritize your safety, and if there is any possibility of danger, do not resist. Resisting may prompt the perpetrators to use any weapons they possess.
  3. In case you are involved in any incident or accident, please file a report with the police and contact our office with the details of the incident.
