1. The 17th Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will be held over 12 days from August 28 to September 8 in Paris and other locations.
2. During the 22-day period from Monday, July 22, leading up to the Paris Olympics, and through the day after the closing ceremony on Monday, August 12, the Embassy of Japan in France and other related institutions reported a total of 22 cases of crimes (including attempts) in which Japanese nationals were victims. The breakdown is as follows: 16 cases of pickpocketing, 4 cases of bag theft, 1 case of other theft, and 1 case of fraud. It is suspected that the actual number of cases involving Japanese victims is higher than these reported figures, as there may have been incidents not reported to the Embassy. During this period, pickpocketing and other thefts were particularly common in areas with many tourists, such as Charles de Gaulle International Airport, inside Olympic venues, tourist attractions near the Olympic venues, hotels, restaurants, and on trains and subways. Travelers need to exercise caution.
3. The current alert level of the Vigipirate, France’s national security alert system, is at its highest level. In France, there have been incidents in April and May this year where suspects planning terrorist attacks targeting the Olympics were arrested. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the possibility that terrorist incidents may still occur.
4. Given this situation, those currently staying in France or planning to stay are advised to pay attention to the information provided in the spot advisories issued on June 24 and July 24 and to take care to avoid becoming victims of crime or getting involved in trouble. In areas where large numbers of people gather, such as near stadiums and event venues, please be especially vigilant, minimize your time in such areas, and always prepare safety measures such as identifying evacuation routes in advance. If you see any suspicious individuals, ensure your safety by leaving the area immediately.
