Typhoon Ampil is expected to affect eastern Japan, including Tokyo, from 16 August and could disrupt transportation and services. High winds, heavy rain and storm surges are expected. Follow instructions issued by local authorities. Check the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) and NHK World News for the latest updates.

Following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 8 August, the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a megaquake advisory for large parts of Japan. There’s a possibility for further earthquakes. Monitor local media and follow advice of local authorities. Japan is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. Japanese authorities have detailed plans to respond to natural disasters. In an earthquake, follow the advice of local authorities and emergency signage. Move to higher ground immediately if you’re in a coastal region after a major earthquake.

We advise:

Exercise normal safety precautions in Japan.

Higher levels apply in some areas.
