  • Scams involving the misuse of QR codes from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are rampant.

  • There have been reports of scams impersonating consular staff.

  • Various types of fraud are widespread in the area, so continue to exercise caution.

Below is information regarding a recently confirmed scam in the area. Please also review previous alerts and information (see #3 below), and stay vigilant to avoid falling victim to scams in Dubai.

1. Fraud Involving Misuse of RTA QR Codes:

Scammers are taking advantage of QR codes placed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) at metro stations, bus stops, public parking lots, and RTA customer service centers. These scammers place fake QR codes over legitimate ones, redirecting victims to fraudulent websites that resemble the official RTA website. These fake sites are used to steal personal information, account details, or money.

To avoid falling victim to this scam:

  • Do not scan QR codes that appear suspicious, such as those that seem to have been placed over original QR codes.

  • After scanning a QR code, compare the URL of the site you are redirected to with the official RTA website URL to ensure there are no discrepancies.

2. Scam Impersonating Consular Staff:

We have received reports of scams where fraudsters impersonate consular staff. These scammers use the names and photos of consular staff members to deceive victims into believing they are receiving messages from legitimate embassy personnel. The scammers attempt to trick victims into sending money.

Please note, consular staff will never approach individuals to solicit money for business or transactions. If you receive any suspicious messages, please contact the embassy immediately.

3. Embassy Website (Safety Information):

On the embassy’s website (Safety Information), we provide basic information on safety measures in the area, tips to prevent fraud, and other important advice for those staying in the UAE. If you know someone who has recently arrived in the country, please encourage them to check the website for important safety information.
