On March 2nd, around 3:00 AM, a robbery incident occurred near the exit of the Carnival venue (Sector 13) in Rio de Janeiro, involving a Japanese man. The victim was using his smartphone near the Carnival exit when several perpetrators suddenly approached and stole his shoulder bag. The victim fell to the ground and sustained minor abrasions. He also reported that when he looked at the assailants, one of them was pointing a gun at him.

Advice from the Consulate:

  • During Carnival, street crimes targeting tourists increase, and Japanese nationals are often victims of such incidents.

  • When going out, carry only the essentials, and keep valuable items spread out in different places.

  • If you encounter a robbery, do not resist. Stay calm and comply with the assailants’ demands.
