Following the presidential election held on Wednesday, October 9, reports are beginning to suggest a victory for Frelimo’s candidate, Filipe Nyusi. In response, opposition candidate Mondlane has called for a nationwide strike on October 21. Additionally, on October 16, during Mondlane’s visit to Nampula, reports indicate that police fired shots (whether live rounds or rubber bullets is unclear) and used tear gas to disperse gathered supporters.
The electoral process is ongoing, with the National Election Commission expected to announce the official results on October 24, and the Constitutional Committee to rule on the election outcome by November 6. Considering the current situation, we strongly advise avoiding unnecessary outings and staying away from any demonstrations. If you encounter protests, leave the area immediately and prioritize your personal safety.
