Recently, two incidents of theft targeting Japanese nationals occurred in Harare: one involving a vehicle break-in and the other a pickpocketing case. In Zimbabwe, there is a tendency for the number of criminal incidents to increase from October to the end of the year. Therefore, it is crucial to remain vigilant and implement safety measures when going out.

1. First Incident (Vehicle Break-in)
Around noon in late September, a Japanese national was dining at a restaurant in Harare when their parked vehicle was broken into in the restaurant’s parking space. The lock was tampered with, and food and other items were stolen from inside the car. Therefore, please take the following precautions for safety:
• Choose a parking spot that is visible to people, such as near entrances or close to security personnel.
• Do not leave valuables unnecessarily inside the vehicle. If necessary, place them in a trunk or other locations that are not visible from outside.
• Install security measures like alarm systems or dash cameras in the vehicle.
2. Second Incident (Pickpocketing)
In early October, around 10 PM, a Japanese national attending a music festival in Harare was a victim of theft in a crowded area. While enjoying the music, their shoulder bag was unzipped, and a wallet and mobile phone were stolen from inside. Therefore, please consider the following safety measures:
• Avoid unnecessary outings at night. If you must go out, stay alert and cautious.
• Do not enter crowded areas unnecessarily. If it is necessary, be very vigilant while doing so.
• When carrying valuables, keep them close at all times and remain aware of them, especially in crowded situations.
