Key Points:

• The Irreecha Festival (a celebration of the Oromo people) will be held on Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6.
• Roads around Meskel Square in Addis Ababa are expected to be blocked starting Friday, October 4, due to preparations for the festival.
• Please take extra precautions against crime when going out.

Details:

1. The Irreecha Festival will take place on October 5 in the vicinity of Meskel Square, Addis Ababa, and on October 6 in Bishoftu (Debre Zeit). Large-scale celebrations are expected on both days.
2. Each year, many people from across Oromia region gather in Addis Ababa for the festival. Road closures, police checkpoints, and security screenings are anticipated around Meskel Square, leading to significant congestion.
3. From around noon on Friday, October 4, roads leading to Meskel Square are expected to be closed until the festival ends.
4. Areas where large numbers of people gather, such as festival venues, may become targets for terrorist attacks or crimes like pickpocketing and snatching. There is also a risk that excited crowds could turn violent.
5. Residents should stay informed with the latest updates, avoid areas with road closures, unusual sounds, or large crowds, and exercise caution when moving about.
6. Theft, including pickpocketing and snatching, has been a frequent issue in Addis Ababa. Please remain vigilant when going out.
