According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, as of September 2024, the Federal District of Brasília (DF) has the highest incidence of dengue fever in Brazil, with a rate of 9,779 cases per 100,000 people. Additionally, there have been 440 deaths, compared to just 14 cases last year, representing a roughly 30-fold increase.

With the onset of the rainy season, which will increase mosquito populations, there is a higher likelihood of outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever. It is essential to take preventive measures to protect yourself.

Symptoms and Prevention of Dengue Fever:

  1. Symptoms and Incubation Period: Dengue fever has an incubation period of 3 to 7 days. Symptoms include fever (lasting 5 to 7 days), headache, joint pain, and rash. Muscle pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may also occur. Dengue fever can become severe around 7 days after the onset of symptoms, so it is crucial to monitor the condition closely after diagnosis.
  2. Treatment: There is no specific cure for dengue fever. Treatment generally focuses on alleviating symptoms. Most cases resolve naturally and have a good prognosis, but if the disease progresses to severe dengue, it can be fatal without proper treatment. It is important not to hesitate to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen after fever. Note that individuals who have had dengue fever in the past are at higher risk of severe disease if they are infected again.
  3. Prevention: Prevention is crucial as there is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Since the disease is transmitted through mosquito bites, wear long sleeves and long pants, use mosquito repellent (such as sprays), and use mosquito nets, especially in the evening. Eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around your home, such as buckets and old tires, to prevent mosquito breeding.
  4. Vaccination: There are facilities in the area where vaccination is possible. As of September 12, the Brazilian government is targeting vaccinations for individuals aged 10 to 14, with the possibility of changes. For details, please contact a local vaccination center.
