The Ministry of the Interior’s Police Department has issued a crime prevention advisory. According to the authorities, there has been a noticeable increase in theft cases, particularly targeting vehicles, unattended items, homes, and pickpocketing. While the police are intensifying patrols and crime prevention efforts, it is crucial that everyone remains vigilant and follows the guidelines below to protect themselves and prevent becoming a victim.

1. Basic Principles for Protecting Your Property

• Do not leave easily movable items like bicycles or lawnmowers in the yard.
• Avoid leaving items like ladders that could facilitate home intrusions.
• When going out, always close windows, lock doors, and activate the alarm system.
• Inform a trusted neighbor if you will be away, and ask them to keep an eye on your home.
• If possible, install an alarm system and surveillance cameras.
• Report any suspicious individuals or vehicles to the police immediately.

2. Precautions Against Vehicle Theft and Break-Ins

• Keep your car doors locked even while driving, as thieves can easily snatch items left on seats during stops.
• Never leave valuables or documents in the car, even for a short time. Always lock the doors and close all windows and sunroofs.
• Always lock your car when leaving it unattended.
• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible, especially at night.
• Regularly check the functioning of your security systems.
• Report any suspicious individuals or vehicles to the police immediately.

3. Crime Prevention at the Beach

• When parking near the beach, ensure all windows and sunroofs are closed, and the alarm system is activated.
• Park your bicycle in a visible area and secure it with a lock.
• Avoid bringing valuables or important documents to the beach.
• Do not leave your belongings unattended at the beach. When going for a swim, ask a trusted person nearby to watch your belongings.
• Keep your bags and phones within reach and out of sight from others.

4. Protecting Your Home While You’re Away

• Only inform necessary people about your absence and do not publicize it widely.
• Avoid sharing information online about expensive purchases or vacations.
• Ask a trusted neighbor to take care of your home and collect mail from your mailbox.
• Store cash, valuable jewelry, and important documents in a safe.
• Choose sturdy doors and reliable locks for doors and windows. Install motion-sensor lights, surveillance cameras, and security systems in your yard.
• Consider getting insurance to mitigate losses in the event of a theft.

5. Pickpocket Prevention

• Do not carry valuables like wallets and phones in bags without zippers or in back pockets in public places, markets, or public transportation.
• Keep backpacks or bags containing valuables in front of you where you can see them, to prevent easy access by thieves.
• Be extra cautious in crowded areas, as pickpockets thrive in such environments.
• If you feel pushed in a crowd, it could be a sign of a pickpocket gang, so pay close attention to your surroundings.
