  • At approximately 8:50 AM on Sunday, August 18, an incident occurred on the seaside boulevard (Bord de Mer) in Libreville, where a Japanese woman walking alone was nearly mugged by a man who appeared to be a vagrant. The incident took place between Leon Mba High School and the Radisson Hotel as the woman, carrying a tote bag on her shoulder, was walking alone from the Batterie IV area toward the Kalikak area. A man, estimated to be in his 30s to 40s, approached her from the front and attempted to snatch the tote bag. The woman resisted, causing the man to release the bag and flee the scene.

The city of Libreville has seen a rise in theft incidents. In this case, it is believed that the woman was targeted because she was walking alone during a relatively quiet time of day with her bag in a visible position. Japanese nationals residing in the area are urged to review their personal security measures while walking and to take precautions to avoid becoming victims of crime.

Recommendations include:

  • Wear crossbody pouches and keep them in front of your body.
  • Avoid using tote bags or briefcases.
  • Refrain from using earphones or smartphones while walking.
  • Occasionally look back to stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid walking on the same route as suspicious individuals.
  • Travel during busy times and in groups.
  • Do not wear or carry items that appear valuable.
  • Wear sneakers instead of sandals when walking.
  • If you are targeted, do not resist unnecessarily and prioritize your safety.
