On Saturday, August 17th, at approximately 11:55 AM, an incident occurred at a large shopping mall (Pacific Fair Shopping Centre) in Gold Coast. A mentally unstable woman began to act violently, such as banging on doors, inside a women’s restroom. She pushed down a Japanese mother and child who were attempting to leave the restroom from behind, straddled them, and assaulted them by punching them in the chest and shoulders, and grabbing their collars and hair. The woman was subsequently arrested by police officers who arrived at the scene.

To avoid falling victim to such incidents, please take note of the following precautions:

• If you notice a suspicious person while shopping, try to keep your distance and ensure your safety first. Additionally, notify a nearby store employee or seek help from those around you.
• There have been numerous reports of Japanese nationals being victimized by female perpetrators. Even if the assailant is a woman, do not let your guard down and take the same precautions.
• When using public transportation, such as trains or buses, which are used by a large number of people, always be aware of your surroundings to see if there are any suspicious individuals. Be especially cautious when using public transportation at night.
• In the event of an emergency where you need immediate assistance, dial the emergency number “000.” Depending on the situation, you will be connected to the police, fire department, or ambulance.
