A low-pressure system is forecasted to cause thunderstorms and other storms in various parts of Oman from the night of today, Tuesday, July 30, to around Friday, August 2, 2012.

Forecast for Tuesday, July 30 and Wednesday, July 31: Thunderstorms will occur in the southern Sharqiyah Governorate (eastern Oman) from the night of Tuesday, July 30, and their effects may spread to the coast of the southern Ustad Governorate, the northern Sharqiyah Governorate and parts of Muscat. Drizzle and localized rainfall will continue to be possible in the coastal and mountainous areas of Dhofar Governorate (southern part). Rainfall amounts of 10 to 30 mm are expected.

Forecast for Thursday, August 1 and Friday, August 2: Localized showers and thunderstorms are possible in the coastal areas of southern Sharqiyah and Ustad provinces. Cloud cover may develop in the Hajar Mountains and adjacent areas during the afternoon and evening. Continued drizzle and localized rainfall is possible in the coastal and mountainous areas of Dofar (southern) province. Rainfall amounts of 10-25 mm are expected.

Due to these effects, there is a risk of flooding of dry rivers (wadis) that normally have no water, flooding of roads, etc. Storms, poor visibility, high waves, etc. are expected. Thunderstorms in the vicinity of the Hajjar Mountains have been frequent in recent days, and caution should be exercised even during periods other than those mentioned above. In addition, there are warnings of dust and sand rising on inland roads from Muscat to the south, resulting in poor visibility and the accumulation of sand on the roads. Those who will be in the above areas are advised to stay informed of weather information and to act with personal safety as their first priority.
