On February 22 (Saturday), around 8:00 PM, a theft incident occurred involving a Japanese male. The victim was walking alone from the Cinelândia subway station to his hotel when he was approached by two thieves on Rua Santa Luzia. The perpetrators stole the victim’s belongings and fled on foot.

Consulate Advice:

  • With Carnival approaching, street crimes targeting tourists are on the rise, and incidents involving Japanese nationals have also been frequently reported.

  • Particularly in the Lapa and Centro districts, many robbery incidents involving Japanese nationals have occurred. It is advisable to avoid these areas during late night and early morning hours when there are fewer people. Even during busy times, remain vigilant.

  • There have also been numerous reports of robbery incidents on buses traveling to Lapa and Centro. Even if no suspicious individuals are seen when the bus departs from areas like Copacabana, there have been cases where groups of youths board the bus later and commit robberies. We strongly recommend using safer transportation options, such as taxis.

  • When going out, carry only the essentials, and try to keep valuable items distributed among different places.

  • In the event of a robbery, do not resist and comply with the assailant’s demands.
