A report has been received regarding the so-called “show me the money” scam. Although there have been no recent reports, there is a possibility of a series of such incidents occurring in the future. Therefore, we advise caution.

What is the “Show Me the Money” Scam? In this scam, a foreigner posing as a traveler will approach the victim, often speaking in English (sometimes switching to fluent Japanese mid-conversation). The scammer may say things like:

  • “I’m from Dubai.”

  • “I’ve been to Japan before.”

  • “It’s an honor to talk to a Japanese person.”

  • “I want to visit Japan, so I’d like to see Japanese money for study purposes.”

  • “I just arrived in Indonesia and don’t understand Indonesian Rupiah well, so could you show me some Rupiah?”

If the victim shows or hands over money or a wallet, the scammer will often steal cash from the wallet or forcefully attempt to take the wallet.

Details of the Incident:

  • Date & Time: Late February, around 9:30 PM

  • Location: A souvenir shop in Kuta

  • Incident Details:

    • Two Japanese tourists were shopping in the store when they were approached by two men who greeted them familiarly, saying, “We’re from Dubai, are you Japanese? We’re planning to visit Japan soon.”

    • The scammers asked to see Japanese money, and when the tourists showed them a 1,000 yen bill, they insisted on seeing higher denominations. The tourists handed over several 10,000 yen bills, which were returned to them. However, two 10,000 yen bills were missing.

Past Incidents:

  • Previous reports of the “show me the money” scam have occurred not only on the streets but also in places frequented by Japanese nationals, such as Japanese supermarkets, and even in hotels, which are typically considered safe. In some cases, the scammers have been observed to be a parent and child.

Prevention Tips:

  • If approached suddenly by a stranger or if you are asked for an unusual request, do not be fooled by their behavior or relax your guard. Politely end the conversation and leave the area immediately to prevent being victimized.

Other Reports: In addition to the “show me the money” scam, the consulate has also received reports of other crimes such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and other thefts. Please remain vigilant and cautious to avoid falling victim to such incidents.
