On the night of Saturday, January 11, an Austrian woman was reportedly kidnapped by an armed group in the Agadez region of northern Niger.
In Niger, terrorist and kidnapping incidents perpetrated by Islamist extremist groups occur frequently, with foreign nationals also falling victim. The possibility that foreigners, including Japanese citizens, could become targets or collateral damage in such incidents cannot be ruled out.
A travel advisory has been issued, with Niamey, the capital, under a Level 3 (Avoid All Travel) advisory, and the rest of the country under a Level 4 (Evacuate and Avoid All Travel) advisory.
