Tanzania: Incidents of Robbery by Motorcycle

Reports have been received of Japanese nationals falling victim to motorcycle robberies across various parts of Tanzania, primarily while walking. When moving around, please remain vigilant and use cars or taxis whenever possible.

To Residents and Short-term Visitors in Tanzania:

  1. Recent Reports of Incidents:
During the year-end and New Year period, multiple cases of robbery involving motorcycles have been reported. These incidents occurred in different locations, such as Dar es Salaam and Arusha. However, common features include:

    • Robbers riding in groups of two or three on motorcycles.
    • Use of weapons, such as machetes or knives.
    • The incidents happened while victims were walking.
  2. Consequences of the Incidents:
Some victims sustained injuries and lost cash or valuables.
In Tanzania, people of East Asian descent, including Japanese, stand out and are more likely to be targeted. Be constantly aware that you could become a target and that perpetrators may be watching for opportunities.
  3. Police Observations:
Local police have noted that reports of crimes against foreigners, including Japanese nationals, had declined during the COVID-19 pandemic due to a drop in international tourists. However, with the return of travelers since last year, the number of foreign victims has been rising in tandem.
  4. Precautionary Measures for Visitors:
To all Japanese residents and those visiting Tanzania for tourism or business, especially short-term travelers:
Avoid walking whenever possible. If walking is unavoidable, strictly follow these precautions:

    • Do not carry your smartphone in your hand.
    • Limit the amount of cash you carry.
    • Do not carry your passport (carry copies of the ID page and visa page for police checks if necessary).
    • Avoid wearing a wristwatch.
    • Do not use headphones or earphones while walking.
    • Check maps on your smartphone in advance and walk briskly toward your destination.

Although Tanzania is considered relatively safe compared to other African countries, numerous incidents of theft, pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and robbery in deserted areas have been reported. Losing your passport, cash, or cards could make it difficult to continue your trip, forcing an early return or severely limiting domestic mobility.

Furthermore, while walking during the day is considered safe, nighttime pedestrian travel is extremely dangerous. Many serious crimes, including armed robbery and murder, occur after dark. Use taxis or other forms of transportation at night and avoid walking under any circumstances.
