At 11:14 PM on November 20, 2024, a volcanic eruption occurred in the southwest of Iceland, approximately 3–4 km north of Grindavík, between Mount Stóra-Skogfell and Mount Sylingarfell. The eruption site is nearly the same as the previous one and marks the seventh eruption in a series of volcanic activities that began late last year.

In response, the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management has raised the danger level to “Emergency Level,” the highest of three levels.

Authorities are currently assessing the scale and damage of the eruption. While the activity appears smaller than the eruption in late August this year and seems to have passed its peak, further eruptions may occur in the coming days. No injuries have been reported so far. However, evacuation measures have been implemented in Grindavík, the nearby Blue Lagoon hot spring, and the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant, which are currently closed. The Blue Lagoon has suspended operations for November 21. Additionally, volcanic gas has been observed drifting south toward Grindavík from the eruption site.

Access to the eruption site is restricted. Visitors are strongly urged not to approach the area, block nearby roads (especially those between Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport), or stop to observe the activity. Such actions may obstruct emergency vehicles and increase the risk of accidents.

Notably, this eruption occurred without prior warning signs such as volcanic tremors or surface uplift, which were observed in previous eruptions. Authorities suggest a possible change in the eruption process, making future predictions more challenging. Avoid entering areas near the eruption site, and if it is necessary to visit, inform family or acquaintances and thoroughly research the latest information beforehand.

Currently, Keflavík International Airport is unaffected by the eruption and is expected to operate as usual. However, travelers should check the airport’s website and airline notifications for updates.

As the situation remains dynamic, please monitor updates from relevant authorities and news sources for the latest information.
