- Announcement:
On November 16, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the first confirmed case of Mpox (Clade I) in the United States. Key details are as follows:(1) The California Department of Public Health confirmed this case as related to the Mpox outbreak in Central and East Africa. Despite the confirmation, the CDC assesses the risk of community spread of Clade I Mpox in the United States as low.
(2) The infected individual had recently traveled to East Africa (imported case) and is currently in home isolation after receiving care at a local healthcare facility. Although no Mpox-specific treatment was administered, the patient’s symptoms are improving. The CDC, in collaboration with state public health authorities, is conducting an epidemiological investigation to identify any close contacts.
(3) General contact with others during travel, such as casual interactions, does not pose a significant risk of transmission. While the investigation continues, the CDC’s guidelines remain unchanged.
(4) A Level 2 Travel Health Notice (Practice Enhanced Precautions) remains in effect for the Democratic Republic of Congo regarding Mpox (Clade I).
CDC Travel Health Notice Levels:
- Level 4: Avoid All Travel
- Level 3: Reconsider Nonessential Travel
- Level 2: Practice Enhanced Precautions
- Level 1: Practice Usual Precautions
