(1) In Addis Ababa, theft (pickpocketing, snatching) and robbery occur frequently while walking, regardless of the time of day. Foreigners, like locals, are potential targets at any time. Always remain aware that you may be targeted when walking. Avoid walking during early mornings and nighttime.(2) Pickpocketing incidents often involve distractions, such as grabbing the victim’s arm, splashing water or spitting on them, or pretending to sell goods. If it is evident that you are carrying a mobile phone that is not secured, you may become a target. Attach chains or straps to valuables like wallets and mobile phones, and secure them to your clothing or body.
(3) Always stay alert to your surroundings. If you notice suspicious individuals approaching or sense any unusual situations, leave the area immediately and seek help from nearby police officers or others in the vicinity using clear and straightforward language.
(4) If threatened by someone armed with a firearm or knife, prioritize your safety and comply without resistance.
