Event: Hurricane Warning Western Cuba and Flight Disruptions
A hurricane warning is in effect for western Cuba and the Isle of Youth beginning November 6. Damaging winds, life-threatening storm surge, and destructive waves are expected. Additionally, the Cuban Aviation Corporation announced the temporary suspension of service and flight operations at the airports in Havana, Gerona, Cayo Largo del Sur, and Varadero. U.S. citizens should contact their respective airlines to confirm flight status. Be prepared to shelter in place until the storm passes and services re-open. As of November 5, the Travel Alert for Cuba is Level 3 – defer travel .
The U.S. Embassy continues to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Cuba. However, travel outside of the Havana area for U.S. Embassy employees requires a special notification process which may affect the Embassy’s ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Cuba. Additionally, under Cuban law, during disaster events the Cuban government can prohibit movement of persons and transportation further limiting services.
Actions to Take:
- Have a personal emergency action plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.
- Follow the instructions of local civil defense authorities and monitor local media for developments.
- Remain current on weather, road and water conditions through local and U.S. sources, such as the National Hurricane Center .
- Store water and non-perishable food.
- Be prepared to shelter in place.
