Spain: Major flooding in the Valencia region

Location:  Valencia and surrounding regions

Event:  Severe flooding in Valencia and surrounding regions began on the evening of October 29, 2024.  The U.S. Embassy in Madrid and Consular Agency in Valencia continue to monitor the situation.  Emergency services are responding, but there are still places that cannot be accessed.

Due to the situation and the high volume of calls, the local 112 emergency number may not be available when called.  There is a dedicated phone line for families of missing people: +34 900 365 112.  U.S. citizens in Valencia are advised to follow the instructions of local authorities and remain patient as local authorities address the situation.

Actions to Take:

  • Local authorities advise those in affected areas to stay indoors and shelter in place.
  • Those in areas near rivers and streams are advised to move to more elevated areas.
  • Avoid rising waters and unstable ground.  Authorities warn that travel throughout the region, especially by car, should be avoided.
  • Use caution. Even where it is not raining, rain in other nearby areas can lead to hazardous conditions.
