Points

  • Vehicle break-ins have occurred at a hotel parking lot in San Luis Potosí City and a convenience store parking lot in the Majoreasgo district of León City. In León, vehicle break-ins are particularly common regardless of time or location, so visitors, including business travelers, should exercise extra caution.

1. Incident Overview

  • (1) October 22, 2024 (Tuesday), around 8:00 PM: Four Japanese men (business travelers) visiting San Luis Potosí City on a work trip parked their car in their hotel’s parking lot and went out to eat. Upon returning, they discovered that the left rear window of the vehicle had been smashed, and all tools left in the back seat were stolen. There was no security guard present in the hotel parking lot.
  • (2) October 23, 2024 (Wednesday), around 9:00 PM: Another Japanese man (also a business traveler) stopped at a convenience store near his home in the Majoreasgo district, leaving his car for about 10 minutes. Upon return, he found the left rear window broken, though no valuables were inside, resulting only in damage to the glass.

2. Precautions

  • (1) The incidents occurred in parking lots, where it’s common for people to feel more secure. Even in hotel parking lots, avoid leaving items in plain sight. Opt for hotels that prioritize security whenever possible.
  • (2) Consulate messages have advised caution as vehicle break-ins occur frequently, regardless of time and location. As thefts typically increase towards year-end, remain vigilant against theft. Even if leaving your vehicle momentarily, always lock it and carry valuables like laptops, smartphones, and passports with you.
  • (3) Risks are higher in areas with few people. Even in familiar locations, park close to the building where you can monitor your vehicle, avoiding isolated parking spots.
  • (4) Storing items in the trunk can deter theft, but it’s best to place items there before arriving at the parking location. For hatchback vehicles, ensure items in the trunk are concealed from view. Avoid moving items in and out of the trunk once parked, as this can signal that valuables are stored inside.
