•Recently in León, Guanajuato, there has been a rise in vehicle break-ins, occurring at various locations and times. Visitors, including business travelers, are advised to exercise caution. This particular incident took place when a vehicle was parked on the street due to the absence of a parking lot at the restaurant. Whenever possible, avoid parking in unsecured areas and opt for paid public parking facilities.

1. Incident Overview

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, at around 9:30 p.m., four Japanese nationals (all corporate expatriates) returned to their vehicle after dining at a restaurant in Punto Verde, León. They discovered the rear passenger window on the driver’s side had been shattered, seemingly by a glass cutter. No valuables were left inside the vehicle, so only the glass was damaged. The restaurant lacked a designated parking area, so they had parked on the street where the car was out of view. Although many residential vehicles were parked nearby, only their vehicle was targeted.

2. Precautions

1.In Mexico, vehicle break-ins can occur anytime and anywhere. Always lock your vehicle when leaving it, even for a short period, and carry any valuables with you.

2.The risk of theft increases in locations or times where fewer people are present. Avoid street parking, especially in areas without security personnel. Even when parking in lots, be mindful of isolated spots or areas out of security view, and always assess your surroundings.

3.For items that cannot be carried, storing them in the trunk can be an effective precaution. However, place items in the trunk before arriving at your destination to avoid drawing attention, as thieves may be watching. Avoid handling items in the parking area, and if you drive a hatchback, use coverings to keep contents out of sight.
