1. Social and Security Situation: “Terrorism in Southern Thailand”
During this quarter, an average of approximately 13 incidents per month involving firearms and explosives, suspected to be related to Islamic militant groups, occurred in the southern provinces of Thailand (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and parts of Songkhla).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a Level 3 travel warning (“Avoid all travel”) for Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and some parts of Songkhla (Chana, Thepha, and Saba Yoi districts). All travel to these areas should be avoided for any purpose. Additionally, for other districts in Songkhla, a Level 2 warning (“Avoid non-essential travel”) has been issued, so please be cautious.

There were 64 reports of crimes involving Japanese nationals during the second quarter of 2024, representing an increase of 26 cases compared to the previous quarter.

During this period, 8 Japanese nationals were arrested by the Thai police for various offenses, including murder and illegal residency, while 11 others were deported for violations of immigration laws.

[Beware of Tailored Suit Scams]
Several cases have been reported this quarter where tourists were approached by taxi or tuk-tuk drivers near popular tourist sites, such as the Grand Palace or temples, and taken to a tailor shop to order suits, only to later discover that the prices were several times higher than the market rate.
We recommend researching the reputation of tailor shops and suit prices online beforehand to avoid such situations.
[Sharp Increase in ‘Show Me Your Money’ Scam Reports]
In Bangkok, there has been a continued rise in reports of a scam where individuals, claiming to be from Dubai, approach people asking to see their currency. While engaging with them, victims often find their cash or credit cards stolen. This scam continues to be a significant issue, and multiple reports have been received this quarter.
If approached by strangers with similar requests, please avoid engaging and promptly leave the area.
[Warning Regarding Lost or Stolen Passports]
Numerous reports of lost or stolen passports have been received. There were 79 consultations this quarter, including 21 thefts, continuing at a high level.
Please treat your passport as a valuable item and take care to store it securely. Avoid placing it in easily accessible pockets of backpacks, and be mindful of preventing loss or theft. In crowded places such as trains, shopping districts, or event venues, carry your bag in front of your body.
3. Terrorism and Bomb Incidents
There were no reported incidents involving Japanese nationals during the second quarter of 2024.
4. Kidnapping and Extortion Incidents
There were no reported incidents involving Japanese nationals during the second quarter of 2024.
5. Issues Related to the Safety of Japanese Businesses
No issues concerning the safety of Japanese businesses were reported during the second quarter of 2024.
