Alert: Incidents of Robbery and Assault Against Foreigners (Highway 136, Tlaxcala)

  • There have been incidents of robbery and assault. Please exercise caution, including for business travelers. Even for a short time, avoid exiting your vehicle on the highway and try to disembark in densely populated areas whenever possible.

1. Incident Overview
On Friday, September 27, 2024, around 12:00 PM, a Japanese man and a driver (a corporate expatriate and local staff member) were transporting goods on Highway 136 (just before entering Puebla State). When the victim stopped the vehicle to make a phone call and exited the car, he was approached from behind by two men on a motorcycle. One of the assailants struck him in the head with a firearm, resulting in head injuries requiring several stitches and bruising all over his body. They stole the victim’s wallet and other valuables as well as cash from inside the vehicle before fleeing the scene in the victim’s car.

2. Precautions
Robberies are particularly prevalent on highways in Mexico. Even for a short time, do not exit your vehicle on the highway, and try to disembark in populated areas where there are many people. The risk of becoming a victim increases in areas or at times with fewer people. Recognize that highways do not have police presence, so even in relatively safe areas, the risks are elevated.
