Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Santiago, Chile (September 10, 2024)
Location: Metropolitan Region of Santiago and other major cities throughout Chile
Event: On September 11, 2024, there is a possibility of protests, related to the anniversary of the September 11, 1973, military coup, in the Santiago Metropolitan Region and other major cities throughout Chile. Protests, particularly in the outlying communities of the Metropolitan Santiago Region, may start as early as the evening of September 10, 2024.
Prior protests have been spontaneous and mobile with some incidents of violence. We advise all U.S. citizens to monitor local media for the most up-to-date information regarding active protests.
Actions to Take:
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid crowds.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Keep a low profile.
- Notify friends and family of your safety.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Use caution when walking or driving at night.
- Make contingency plans to leave.
- Review your personal security plans.
- Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
- Carry proper Identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Chilean visa or Tourist Card.
