USA: New York City, Increase in Crime in the Subway System

1. Recent Crime Statistics: According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), there has been a 13.2% increase in subway crimes since January 1st compared to the same period last year. Reports also indicate a significant rise in shooting incidents, with 8 victims this year compared to just 1 during the same period last year. Additionally, arrests for carrying firearms in the subway have doubled to 17 this year, compared to 8 last year.

Response Measures: In response to these concerns, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced increased security measures, including the deployment of National Guard and state troopers, and the installation of security cameras in subway cars and conductor booths by the MTA. The New York City administration has also increased the number of police officers in the subway system, extended their working hours, and intensified baggage checks. However, on the 14th of this month at around 4:45 PM, a shooting occurred inside a subway A-line train in Brooklyn heading towards Manhattan. During an argument between male passengers near Hoyt-Schermerhorn Station, one of the individuals fired a handgun, resulting in a victim being critically injured.
