Since last year, incidents involving youth gangs (sometimes consisting only of girls) have been reported in the Old Town, Freedom Square, and around the Liberty Square subway station in Tbilisi. These groups have been known to surround victims, steal bags, and commit assaults, even in the presence of police officers. They are particularly dangerous, with some members armed with knives to cut handbag straps for theft.
To avoid falling victim to such crimes, please adhere to the following precautions:
- Do not be complacent: Never assume that you are immune to such threats.
- Stay alert: Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Avoid walking alone at night: Minimize nighttime outings by yourself.
- Do not walk around intoxicated: Stay sober and alert.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuable items: Keep valuables out of sight and avoid flashy clothing that draws attention.
- Do not carry easily snatched handbags: Choose bags that are less likely to be targeted.
The perpetrators are always armed, so if you are attacked, do not resist or try to recover stolen items. Your safety is paramount.
