1. Incident Summary

  • Date and Time: April 1, 2022, around noon (12:00 PM)
  • Location: Ravage Park, west side of the Colón Theater, San Nicolás district, Buenos Aires
  • Items Stolen: Mobile phone
  • Details of the Incident: While a Japanese national was taking photographs of the Colón Theater with their mobile phone at the mentioned location, two men approached from behind, snatched the phone, and fled.

2. Crime Prevention Measures

  • (1) Mobile phone thefts, including pickpocketing, have been frequent in the past, and with the recent increase in tourists visiting Buenos Aires, similar incidents targeting unfamiliar tourists at famous landmarks like the Colón Theater have become more common. Japanese nationals, being more noticeable in appearance, are particularly vulnerable and should exercise heightened caution.
  • (2) Therefore, whether at tourist spots or outdoors in general, avoid carelessly taking out your mobile phone, even if other pedestrians are doing so. If you must use your phone for emergency calls, have a companion keep watch over your surroundings. If you are alone, enter a building or position yourself with your back to a wall to avoid being approached from blind spots.
  • (3) Be cautious when using a neck strap for your mobile phone, as it may cause unexpected injuries during a theft.
