On the afternoon of August 11th, around 5:00 PM, a mobile phone snatching incident occurred on a less-frequented sidewalk in the Upper Hill area. The victim was standing still and checking a map on their phone when a perpetrator on a solo motorcycle snatched the phone. Fortunately, the Japanese national involved was unharmed. However, a similar incident in February in the Kilimani area involved a non-Japanese victim who was shot with a firearm, highlighting the potential severity of such incidents.
Japanese nationals residing in or traveling to Kenya should remain aware that this is not Japan and observe the following precautions:
- If you become a victim of a snatching incident, prioritize your safety. Do not resist or attempt to recover your belongings.
- Avoid walking during the day if possible. If unavoidable, steer clear of areas with few people or vehicles.
- Refrain from using your mobile phone on the street. When requesting a taxi, wait in a secure location such as a building’s premises and avoid stepping onto the street until the vehicle arrives.
