- During the Lunar New Year holiday season, there is an anticipated increase in pickpocketing incidents in Helsinki.
- Last year, over 10 cases, including attempted thefts, were reported to the Embassy during the same period.
- Please exercise caution in crowded areas and locations frequented by tourists to avoid becoming a victim of pickpocketing.
As the Lunar New Year (January 29 this year) holiday season approaches, there is an expected rise in pickpocketing incidents targeting Asian tourists in Helsinki. Last year, more than 10 cases, including attempted thefts, were reported to the Embassy during this period. The following patterns have been observed:
- Offenders often act in groups, specifically targeting Asian tourists.
- Most incidents occurred in crowded areas such as Aleksanterinkatu, Esplanadi, and the Market Square.
- Pickpockets typically approach from behind and unzip backpacks to steal contents while the victim is stationary, such as waiting at traffic lights or in front of stores.
This year, similar incidents are expected. Please remain vigilant in tourist-heavy and crowded areas to avoid pickpocketing.
Tips to Avoid Pickpocketing:
- Be mindful of where you carry your wallet or bag.
- Store your wallet in a hard-to-reach place.
- Avoid keeping valuables in easily accessible areas such as back pockets or outer backpack pockets.
- After shopping, do not leave your wallet unattended; store it in a secure location in your bag.
- Do not carry all your valuables and passport in a single pouch or case. Instead, distribute them among different locations.
In Case of an Incident:
While some victims have managed to avoid losses by noticing the theft in progress, there is a risk of harm if you try to confront the offender. Please prioritize your safety by leaving the scene immediately without attempting to detain the culprit.
Reissuing a passport requires an original copy of your family register, which can result in significant delays. To avoid such inconvenience, take every precaution to prevent pickpocketing.
The Embassy collects and analyzes information on crimes and accidents involving Japanese residents and travelers. If you fall victim to a crime or accident, please report it to the local police and inform the Embassy as well.
